Diploma Policy for Department of Biotechnology and Life Science (Master's Program)

(A) Acquire basic knowledge and ethics in natural science and engineering that will contribute to the application and development of biotechnology.
(B) Students will acquire cutting-edge specialized knowledge and skills to take a broad view of current problems and to control and integrate them using a biotechnology approach to resolve them.
(C) Acquire the knowledge and skills to plan, design, and execute the process from research and development to the creation and practical application of economic value.
(D) To acquire persuasive presentation skills and the effective communication skills necessary for interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as the language skills necessary to carry out these activities in an international setting.

Curriculum Policy of Department of Biotechnology and Life Science (Master's Program)

(1) Curriculum organization policy
Department of Biotechnology and Life Science (Master's Program) provides systematic education with the aim of developing human resources who will contribute to the health and welfare of mankind from an international perspective by undertaking cutting-edge research in biotechnology, which continues to make remarkable progress, in order to realize the diploma policy. Major specialized courses are organized to cultivate the foundation required for the field of biotechnology while practicing cutting-edge research in the field of biotechnology, and major training courses are organized to develop human resources who are willing to boldly take on new research fields and contribute to society by acquiring sufficient specialized knowledge and problem-solving skills in the field of biotechnology, and [Perspectives (B) and (C)]. In addition, with the aim of cultivating interdisciplinary thinking, the ability to summarize peripheral-related technologies from a bird's eye view, the ability to disseminate research results, and educational guidance and practical training experience, [Perspective (D)] is organized to provide a flexible and wide-ranging curriculum.

② Policies regarding the content and implementation of education
To enable students to acquire highly specialized knowledge, we offer specialized courses broadly categorized into biofunctional engineering, applied bioengineering, and biosocial engineering, covering a wide range of academic fields in the field of bioengineering. We also offer special bioengineering research, which involves summarizing and presenting related technologies. We also offer special lectures on biofunctional engineering, applied bioengineering, and bioengineering seminars to develop specialized knowledge and problem-solving skills. To prepare for master's thesis research, we offer small-group instruction in bioengineering seminars and advanced bioengineering research for master's thesis writing. Furthermore, we offer special courses in bioengineering English, brainstorming in English, and on-campus internships to develop language skills and the ability to think and collaborate interdisciplinaryly. We also offer special courses in bioengineering education and research, which foster the ability to present research results, educational guidance, and off-campus practical training. In particular, for research areas with high societal needs, such as medicine/drug discovery, environment/energy/materials, and robotics/AI, we offer packages of related courses to foster multifaceted thinking and provide learning that transcends majors.

③ Policy regarding methods for evaluating learning outcomes
In order to cultivate engineers and researchers who have acquired the perspectives set forth in the Diploma Policy, grades are evaluated by exams and reports for lectures, and by reports and oral exams for experiments, practical training, and seminars. Grades for courses are expressed in five grades: S, A, B, C, and D, with S, A, B, and C being considered passes and D being considered a fail. Those who pass are awarded the required credits. In addition, for dissertations, the examination criteria and methods are clearly stated, and the dissertation examination committee conducts strict examinations based on these.
